This project rectifies difficult existing conditions to create an intricately detailed apartment. An existing stair with restricted headroom is removed to make way for a new winding stair with integrated storage. The louvered screen guardrail provides a textured architectural backdrop for the new kitchen and living space on the lower floor. Upstairs, the removal of partitions and reconfigured storage closets clarify a path to the entertaining space on the adjacent rooftop patio. Dark fumed oak cabinetry and stair finishes contrast with bleached wood flooring, and black ceramic tile and thick-edge marble imbue a sense of material richness.
