Gramercy Lobby
This existing lobby in Manhattan serves four unique loft apartments in the landmarked building above. With several
niches creating odd spatial idiosyncrasies, the small space was formally cluttered and materially dated. Minor modifications to the geometry around the egress stair door and the elevator door, together with a new bench and built-in trash receptacle near the new built-in mailbox provide programmatic hierarchy. New finishes throughout pay a simplified homage to the neighborhood's history of grandeur and accentuate the generous ceiling height, with an extra-tall "wainscot" of gently-figured marble and warm brass paneling, subtle brass reveals and inlays, and custom plasterwork. New brass-clad entry doors return the facade to its historical proportions, and open to a new floor of large-aggregate palladiana terrazzo.
